Operating an aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) takes your piloting skills and experience to a whole new level. When you enrol in the AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating), you’ll open the door to new career opportunities and become a more confident pilot.
What’s involved?
This course is available for Commercial Pilot Licence Holders or
Advanced Private Pilot Licence Holders. The benefits of such a
rating is that you’ll have more flexibility for flying in a wider range
of weather conditions under IFR.
The course involves advanced flight training for pilots seeking to:
• Improve their qualifications and flying skills
• Operate an aircraft under Instrument Flying Rules (IFR).
Loans are available through RVAC for eligible students.


Who’s it for?
Our course is suited to pilots who wish to:
• Work as an advanced pilot across a variety of industry fields
• Apply for a CASA Multi-Engine Class rating or,
• Command Instrument Rating (upon successful completion of the
course)
Requirements for the Course
To enrol in this course you will need to complete the following:
• To hold a Current Private Pilot Licence (Proficiency Check, Flight
Review or recent training to have been conducted within the past
2 years)
• An Australian Security Identification Card (ASIC)
• Class 1 Medical from a Designated Authorised Medical Examiner
(DAME)
• Aviation English Language Proficiency (Minimum ICAO level 4) Year 12 or equivalent
• Hold a pass in 7 CPL Exams
• 50 Hours Pilot In Command Cross Country time
• Pre-Enrolment Skill and Knowledge Assessment, short SIM session (no charge) and interview
Additional Requirements
• IREX Course texts and associated charts, maps and equipment which your Flight Instructor will advise
• Students who wish to apply for a VET Student Loan will be required to meet stringent language, literacy and numeracy requirements
• Australian Senior Secondary Certificate, i.e. Year 12
• Completion of an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English)
• ACFS Exit level 3 LLN test. (Australian Core Skills Framework)
• In addition to this, you must provide evidence that you are an Australian Citizen, Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder, or eligible New Zealand SCV holder
What’s involved in this course?
Your Flight Training will involve additional hours of flying lessons
in one of our aircraft equipped for IFR, and also practical tuition
in one of our CASA Approved Simulators. The course builds on
the foundation and flying skills you developed during your CPL/
PPL flight training and you learn to prepare advanced flight plans,
navigate the aircraft from point to point under Instrument Flying
Rules, perform instrument arrivals and departures and develop
advanced aircraft handling techniques.
The course is full-time of 17 weeks duration (4–5 days per
week). IREX theory examinations are set and marked by CASA
appointed conducting officers. All flight tests for licence and rating
qualifications are conducted by CASA Approved Test Officers
(ATOs). RVAC Flight Training has two such officers on staff

What happens next?
Once your flight training is complete and you have:
• Accumulated the required flight hours
• Passed the specified Theory Examinations
• Demonstrated the required competency.
You will undertake a Flight Test with our CASA Approved Testing Officer to gain your Instrument Flight Rating.
