What are the prerequisites for obtaining a Grade 3 FIR?
To be eligible for a Grade 3 Flight Instructor Rating, you must:
• Hold a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) with the appropriate aircraft category rating.
• Complete an RVAC course in the principles and methods of instruction.
• Meet specified aeronautical experience requirements.
• Pass the Pilot Instructor Rating – Common (PIRC) theory examination.
• Successfully complete a flight test for the rating and at least one training endorsement.
What does the FIR training course involve?
The FIR training course encompasses both theoretical and practical components, including:
• Ground school covering instructional techniques, human factors, and regulatory knowledge.
• Flight training focusing on teaching methods, student management, and flight demonstration skills.
• Development of lesson plans and delivery of flight briefings.
• Assessment of student performance and provision of constructive feedback.
How can I progress to higher instructor grades?
Progression to higher instructor grades involves meeting specific experience and training requirements:
Grade 2 Instructor: Requires at least 200 hours of flight training experience and completion of a Grade 2 training endorsement.
Grade 1 Instructor: Requires at least 500 hours of flight training experience and completion of a Grade 1 training endorsement
Are there additional endorsements I can obtain?
Yes, after obtaining your FIR, you can pursue additional training endorsements to expand your instructional capabilities, such as:
Instrument Rating Training Endorsement.
Multi-Engine Class Rating Training Endorsement.
Night VFR Rating Training Endorsement.
Design Feature Training Endorsement.
Spinning and Aerobatics Training Endorsements
What are the recency requirements for maintaining my FIR?
To maintain the privileges of your FIR, you must:
Complete an instructor proficiency check within 12 months of the initial issue of the rating and every 24 months thereafter.
Demonstrate competency in at least one of the training endorsements you hold during the proficiency check.
Will I be guaranteed a job at RVAC after completing the FIR course?
While we can’t guarantee employment, many of our Flight Instructor Rating graduates do go on to join the RVAC team, depending on instructor demand and role availability.
